书生凌伟晴在荒郊破庙避雨，救回一头小狐。晴拜访章员外借宿，但章为富不仁，竟要晴入住鬼屋，欲借鬼害晴。然而女鬼姜文翠非但没有加害晴，且与他结为好友。晴结识美女胡小丽，丽知晴遇女鬼，意欲助晴驱鬼，但见翠保护晴，免他受章家恶仆所害，遂对翠放下成见。章找法师诛灭翠，丽及晴欲救无从，翠被捉入地府。丽找虬髯侠士救回翠。翠恨章赶尽杀绝，与丽大闹章家，并杀章报却冤仇。侠士找得垂死民女让翠借尸还魂，晴与翠有情人终成眷属。原来丽就是晴在破庙所救小孤，如今报了大恩，便与侠士一同离去。
