本片根据《聊斋》中之〈书痴〉改编。书呆子郎玉柱被叔叔郎中元欺负，被迫搬进了传说中常闹恶鬼的「孝廉府」，遇上了颜如玉母女，颜母因伤重毙命，玉柱与如玉日久生情，终结成夫妇。郎中元不信玉柱如此幸运，与友史良金往「孝廉府」查察，良金见如玉美艳动人，竟拐走如玉，将其迷姦。良金妻妾，因妒成恨，以孔雀胆毒害如玉，如玉化成厉鬼，将中元、良金等人杀毙报仇。玉柱因如玉已不在人世，不禁一阵辛酸，只有无尽的寂寞与怀念。
